My Interview with Mary...

Mary over at The Woo Woo Teacup Journal had the great idea of holding impromptu interviews with blog friends, and when she asked for interested parties, I said… bring it on. Because there’s nothing I like more than talking about myself.

In this case, Mary will be playing the part of Babwa Wahwahs, and I’ll be her next celebrity guest… after the jump…

What is your current job? What tasks are part of it? What do you enjoy about your work?

Currently, I’m the Admin for a group of student support departments (four departments, to be exact) at a University. I serve as the office manager, budget officer and bookkeeper, and executive assistant to the boss. None of that’s in my title, but you know… duties as assigned and all that. My daily duties can seem kind of mundane (receptionist, student intern supervisor, secretary, etc…), but I also function as the hub of most of our large projects, so I get to participate in just about everything that goes on (whether I like it or not). There is event-planning, lots of student outreach, and 80 hours a week’s worth of organizing, communicating, and knocking heads together. This isn’t where I pictured myself when I graduated from college, but I love being busy, I love being counted on for important things, and I LOVE working with students. I should also mention that I was thrust into this position by a crazy set of circumstances that had me in fits for about four months. After all the sturm und drang, I can now say that I love the people I work with, I like what I’m doing, and there’s some potential growth. Things are looking good.

What were you like as a little kid? How would have described yourself then? How would others have described you? How have you changed since then?

To be honest, I don’t remember much of that time. I’m a middle child, and I know lots of parents kind of lose interest in documenting childhood once they’ve had their first child, but my parents took it to an extreme. And since my memory is crappy anyway, I only have vague, murky ideas of myself back then. I do know that I was incredibly cute – a heartbreaker, really; yellow hair, huge blue eyes, pale skin, and a grin that made old ladies faint. WHAT HAPPENED!!? If I’m doing the describing, I’d probably say I was shy and quiet, but when I felt safe and comfortable, I was a terror – I spent most of my early years attached to my mother by a leash. My parents, meanwhile, tell me that I was one of those kids that Cosby put on his show, saying and doing the darndest things. There are lots of stories of this cute little blonde boy acting like a complete whacko in public – knocking over mannequins, hitting complete strangers, throwing up in restaurants – but all in such a cute way. Since then, I’ve gotten a whole lot less cute, but most of my personality is still intact: I’m shy and quiet, but when I feel safe and comfortable, I’m a complete whacko.

What is your earliest memory?

Well, remember: vague and murky… but I sort of remember my first airplane ride to visit my grandmother in Wisconsin. I even remember the coloring book I had and the music I had with me (Raffi – dear lord, I still love me some Raffi, esp. Baby Beluga and Apples and Bananas [Aaypples and Banaynays]).

What is your history with music? Where did it start? Other than listening to music, how do you connect with it as an adult?

I go all the way back with music. My parents tell me that I used to clap out drum parts to classical music as young as two or three, and I loved to sing along with my records. My parents used to park me in front of relatives and tell me to sing, and everyone would just DIE because I was so good. I don’t remember any of that, but I’ve been told my Home on the Range was particularly moving. Anyway, my aunt was visiting at Christmas when I was about eight years old, and one night she taught me how to read music. She made some flashcards of notes on the staff after dinner, and by bedtime I could pick the notes out on the keyboard by sight. She convinced my parents to put me in piano lessons STAT and that’s when this whole business started. So… piano lessons from third grade to college graduation, marching band in high school, lots of concert band, a little bit of chorus, and more chamber music than I care to recall. Even though I’m not performing music anymore, it’s still very much in my soul – probably always will be. I loved performing (the attention, the praise, the excitement), but it was never really about all that. For me, it was always about the sounds. I found out – quite late, actually – that I take more joy from listening and applauding than from performing. So now, I love that I can be a fan, an enthusiast, a supporter. Let those crazy people stress themselves out and practice for eight hours a day and put up with the politics of subjective critique; I’ll just sit here and enjoy it. Besides, there are lots of other things I’m good at, and most of those things pay a lot more anyway.

What would you like to achieve in the next 5 years?

In the next five years, I would like to achieve… something. Really I have no idea. I know I have to go back to school to get another degree, but in what?? I’ve thought about law school, accounting, teaching… maybe even music history, but I’m still kind of flaking out about it. My boss wants me to go for Higher Education Administration, which makes a lot of sense, but again… I’m not sure that’s what I want to do for the long haul. I definitely want to move to a big city (preferably New York), but I feel pressure to make a few more important decisions before taking that on. So yeah… something.

Thanks, Mary!! And here’s five for you:

1. I know you like to be crafty: what’s your favorite crafty/artistic pursuit and why?
2. You’re a writer and a reader, so I’m curious: how do you feel about comic books and graphic novels? Are you into them?
3. Childhood fave time: book, toy, subject in school, food. GO!
4. Describe how you felt when you finished writing your book (some writers talk about a feeling of loss, others say it’s like having a load taken off).
5. This one is complicated, but we tossed it around on a staff retreat a few weeks ago, and I’m interested in your thoughts. Part A: You win a vacation on a gameshow to anywhere in the world! Where would you go? But wait, there’s a Part B: the show will only pay for your lodging and one meal a day, and you are otherwise completely broke. Where to now?

MEME TIME...

Mary tagged me for a meme!

1. Last movie you saw in a theatre?
Actually, I experienced a rare and very welcome Movie binge earlier this summer, taking in Ironman, Indiana Jones, and Sex in the City in a two week period. That’s more movies than I saw all last year, so it seems I’ve met my quota. But I definitely plan on seeing WALL-E, Hancock, Twilight, and the Harry Potter movie later in the year.

2. What book are you reading?
Believe it or not, I’m currently reading Wuthering Heights. It was never assigned to me in high school (I think I got stuck with Tess of the D’urbervilles instead)… Anyway, this wasn’t a random thing. I just finished reading the first three Twilight books (all in about a week and a half, bam-bam-bam style), and the novel was mentioned several times. In a way, it was used as an extended allusion, running parallel to the story. The whole time, I was frustrated because I wasn’t sure I was getting all of what Stephenie Meyer was trying to communicate when she alluded to Wuthering Heights, so it seemed fitting to pick it up and see what all the fuss was about. The good news: I’m kind of enjoying it, which surprises me.

3. Favorite board game?
This one is tough because I LOVE board games in general. If I really want to think and stuff, I rely on Chess, but if I’m just looking to enjoy myself, I like Boggle, Cranium, and Trivial Pursuit (I should mention I’m terrible at traditional Trivial Pursuit, because I’m not one for the obscure knowledge, but I DOMINATE the themed versions, like 90’s pop culture or Lord of the Rings). Ultimately, though, I think my favorite is probably Monopoly.

4. Favorite magazine?
Entertainment Weekly, hands down. It feeds all of my cravings: celebrity gossip, music, movies, and TV. People can get a little tedious for me with all those human interest stories. I think the Tab Mags are fun, but I don’t feel like I’ve learned anything after flipping through one.

5. Favorite smells?
Garlic bread… freshly mown grass… citrus

6. Favorite sounds?
Dance music, a really good coloratura soprano, Pavarotti singing anything, most things by Tchaikovsky, Enya… Wow, those are all music-related. Let’s try again… I love hearing my friends’ ringtones…

7. Worst feeling in the world?
Loss and the loneliness that inevitably follows.

8. What is the first thing you think of when you wake up?
1,001 creative ways to destroy my alarm clock.

9. Favorite fast food place?
That depends: McDonald’s for fries. Wendy’s for burgers (and Frosties).

10. Future child’s name?
Jim Bob for a boy and Soda Pop for a girl.

11. Finish this statement. “If I had lot of money I’d…”Ahh… crass consumerism – my favorite topic. First, I’d buy a house. Then, I would buy a beach house. Then I would give a whole crapload to my favorite no-kill animal shelter. Finally, I would get whatever is left in pennies and snorkel in them like Scrooge McDuck.

12. Do you sleep with a stuffed animal?
Never. They always wound up under the bed with the dust bunnies.

13. Storms- cool or scary?
VERY COOL! Unless people get hurt, or lose their homes, or if they come near me. I love thunderstorms the best because nothing really bad happens to anything. And while I wouldn’t appreciate a tornado or hurricane destroying my stuff, I find them fascinating and exciting from a safe distance.

14. Favorite drink?
Diet Coke. And I’m going through a Cran-Apple Juice phase right now.

15. Finish this statement. “If I had the time I would…”Write! A novel… a play… a symphony… an album of cheesy techno ballads…

16. Do you eat the stems on broccoli?
I tend to avoid broccoli whenever I can, but when I do eat it, yes… I eat the stems. I can’t taste the difference.

17. If you could dye your hair any color, what would be your choice?
I would bring out the natural red more.

18. Name all the different cities/towns you’ve lived in?
Spartanburg, SC… Greenville, SC… Cincinnati, OH… Brevard, NC (this one is debatable because it was only for one summer and I hated it so much I spent quite a bit of time commuting home)…

19. Favorite sports to watch?
I only enjoy watching the Olympic sports, especially gymnastics, swimming (also, synchronized), diving, some of the track and field, ice-skating, ski-jumping

20. One nice thing about the person who sent this to you?
Mary is just awesome. I don’t know her personally, but I can tell she’s very smart, very nurturing, very supportive, and very creative.

21. What’s under your bed?
Nothing… at the moment.

22. Would you like to be born as yourself again?
Umm… Yes, I suppose, just prettier.

23. Morning person or night owl?
Total night owl.

24. Over easy or sunny side up?
Neither… I like ‘em scrambled.

25. Favorite place to relax?
My bed watching movies… any old bar drinkin’ some cocktails with my friends… on my walks

26. Favorite pie?
Apple

27. Favorite ice cream flavor?
French Silk! You have to try it. It’s kind of hard to find because not every store carries it, but trust me… DEElicious.

Five Obsessions Meme

Thanks for tagging me, Mary...

First, I feel the need to define "obsession"… it's a tricky word after all. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad – I have the bad habit of using it inappropriately. So, here:

1. The domination of one’s thoughts or feelings by a persistent idea, image, desire, etc.
2. the idea, image, desire, feeling, etc., itself
3. the state of being obsessed
4. the act of obsessing

This definition comes courtesy of Dictionary.com, and it doesn’t sound all that bad to me.

Try this one:

1. Compulsive preoccupation with a fixed idea or an unwanted feeling or emotion, often accompanied by symptoms of anxiety
2. A compulsive, often unreasonable idea or compulsion

That one’s from the American Heritage Dictionary, and, I dunno, I get a negative spin from it, don’t you? I think this definition applies to the medical use of the word, which leads directly to obsessive compulsion, which I gather is not so good. I’m particularly intrigued by the use of the word unwanted, because it implies that all obsessions are bad, and maybe they are if taken to an unhealthy degree. But obsession, in its benign form (which I think the first definition captures quite well), is one of my favorite things in the world.

There’s so much garbage to digest in the world. Excuse me if I sound like that dude who yammers away, often unintelligibly, at the end of every episode of 60 minutes, but I can’t help but agree with him when he says that the world is becoming more and more difficult to take in. It doesn’t matter what you’re into – sports, music, video games, underwater basketweaving – the internet age is one that never gets tired, never shuts up, and never gets old. Nothing is obsolete and nothing is obscure.

All of these ideas, images, desires, and feelings are constantly coming straight at our faces. They’re like bugs, and we’re the windshields. How do our powerful yet easily distracted brains cope with so much stimulation? My theory is: by fixation. Every so often, my mind catches something as it whirrs past, and I just have to attack it. I want to sink my claws into it and hold it and play with it, because I know in the back of my mind that if I had blinked at the wrong time, or perhaps been looking in a different direction, I might have missed it. Very little surprises me nowadays, but when something does, it feels so very once-in-a-lifetime.

Maybe our brains are yearning for a little focus. Maybe they’re just dizzy. The point is: every brain enjoys being fixated every once in a while. It makes the world stand still just long enough so that the brain can do what it was born to do… learn.

Speaking for myself, I’m a serial obsessive. When something catches my interest or sparks my imagination, I’ll spend hours learning everything I can until I get tired. I’d like to say that these periods last longer than an evening, but most of the time they don’t. But on those rare occasions when something captures me for days, weeks, months… God, I cherish them, because, to put it simply, they make the hands on the clock turn.

Here’s the meme part… 5 obsessions that I’ve had, and if and when they’ve ever caused me embarrassment.

1. Madonna
2. Reality TV
3. R. L. Stine
4. The Lord of the Rings
5. Jean Claude Van Damme

I will never ever be ashamed of my obsession with Madonna. It doesn’t even embarrass me to admit out loud to you that I’ve read not one, but two of her biographies. I own every album, and I’ve seen every movie. For the record, most of her movies suck – just because I’m obsessed doesn’t mean I’m an idiot. Evita, however, is sublime, and she’s sublime in it. Anyway, the only instance that could come close to embarrassment would be the time I get into a verbal sparring match with some asshole about Madonna and her contributions to popular culture. Believe or not, Madonna can be a polarizing topic, and in retrospect, it was probably silly that the argument got so heated. I don’t feel strongly about many things, but I will fight a bitch for disrespecting my girl.

Reality TV is another thing I for which I can’t apologize. I just love it. I don’t necessarily love all Reality TV shows, but I’m in love with so many of them that I feel obligated to claim the entire genre. The only time I get embarrassed would be those times when people look down on me. I’m lucky to have a co-worker in the office that loves most of the same shows as I, so we spend a good bit of time watercoolering in the morning. Everyone else in the office looks upon us with pity, because clearly, we have way too much time and no life AT ALL if we can devote so much thought and energy to a stupid reality show. Look, it ain’t Shakespeare, but it IS fun and entertaining. I love the idea of rooting for people who aren’t perfect, and hating rotten people without fear of retribution. Also, I’m a huge, HUGE fan of schadenfreude, and there is NEVER a shortage of that on these shows. I don’t even care about the alleged fixing that every show has been accused of, because seriously, if I cared about crap like that I wouldn’t be watching. Frankly, I’m all for producer tampering – most of the time, it’s all in the name of putting on a better show, and that works for me.

OMG, do you remember R.L. Stine?? Need a hint? Two words: Fear Street. I read every single damn one. If I’m being honest, these books are just awful. I recently reread one of them in one sitting during a visit to my local public library, and I came away with this mixed feeling: revulsion over the horrifically bad writing and a sweet, sweet nostalgia that made me a little misty. I’ve always had a healthy appreciation for art that is so bad it’s good, so it’s no wonder I was obsessed with these books in middle school. When everyone else was moving on to Stephen King and Dean Koontz, I was still hopelessly devoted to Fear Street. I did eventually move on, but I remember fondly.

My heart belongs to J.R.R. Tolkien. My obsession with all things LOTR is probably my most encompassing, most engrossing, and most unhealthy. I’ve read The Hobbit 25 times, and the fact that I know that number speaks volumes. I’ve read the entire LOTR series 10 times. I own all three movies on Widescreen, and I also own the extended editions. I have all three soundtracks. The extended soundtracks are on my wishlist, and the only reason I haven’t purchased them yet is because I’m waiting for all three to come out so I can buy the boxset. I own the LOTR edition of Trivial Pursuit (I’m unbeaten at this point). I saw each movie twice in theatres, and I stood in line at midnight for the third one. I didn’t dress up because the people who accompanied me threatened to not go if I did, otherwise I would have… totally. I’ve even written fanfic. It’s slash, of course, Sam and Frodo, and really terrible, so no chance of seeing it on this blog… the point is, I wrote it. My obsession has tempered considerably since the last movie came out, but with news of the almost definite production of The Hobbit by Peter Jackson, it will probably be refreshed, renewed, and reprehensible.

Discussing my adoration of Jean Claude Van Damme is really taking me back. I’ve been over him for quite some time, but back in the day, it was extreme, as in… extremely uncomfortable for everyone around me. I fell in love with him after seeing Kickboxer for the first time… and ya’ll, it was love at first spinning kick to the kidneys. Of course, I was in my formative years, so I never spoke of my love for him, but be assured, whenever I said my crush was Kathy Ireland, I was really thinking of JCVD. It is really too bad what happened to him… age has not been kind. But in a weird way, he was my first and I’ll never forget that.

Anyway – I don’t usually do the tagging thing, but this was a really fun meme. I highly recommend you give it a shot.

That's all folks so don't bother to
